Community Based Disaster Management Program

Bangladesh Social Development Services is working in the river basin area of Padma. It is a place of disaster prone. Almost all types of disasters like flood, storms, river bank erosion occurred in every year. Hence BSDS is working here in this river basin area for a long time, BSDS have vast knowledge about geographical position, social structure, value, people's needs, power structure, culture etc. of this area. BSDS has experienced staffs for disaster management. The director of the organization has depth knowledge about implementing disaster management project as he served as a project manager of CRWRC- BEES disaster project during 1991-1996 in Chittagong. He received various training on disaster management from CRWRC, BEES, BRAC, World Vision, CARE-B and BDPC. BSDS has a strong and experienced staff team.

The activities of Disaster management Programs have three wings: a) Before disaster: * Volunteer selection * Training * Risk Assessment * Fund raising for emergency time. b) During disaster * Sift people & animal to safer place * Arrange food and drink * Medical Support c) After Disaster: * Arrange food and drink * Medical Support * Rehabilitation through making house, Agriculture inputs.

BSDS has effectively managed last five years emergency operation with technical capabilities. BSDS supports institutional capacity building activities; community disaster response simulation drills and distribution of relief items. In response to monsoon flooding, BSDS has provided mobile water treatment technologies. BSDS worked with communities to improve disaster awareness and developed disaster management plans when disaster does strike. Before planning disaster management project for a specific area BSDS implement some steps like:

* Preparation of Project Feasibility Study

* Preparation of Environmental Assessment

* Preparation of Social and Health Assessments

BSDS gives priority to meet immediate human needs, such as emergency public health and the distribution of relief materials. BSDS generally provided survival kits of non-food items, pure water, food, and help controlling diarrhea. BSDS provided technical training for staff & beneficiaries on disaster management, awareness development, primary health & personal hygiene, water purification, BSDS made medical team for health services headed by MBBS doctor. BSDS also worked with Government, civil society and other NGOs in awareness raising, capacity building, and human resource development to improve disaster management capabilities.

BSDS have faced devastating flood in 2004. Before the flood stroke, we provided awareness development training for beneficiaries, motivated them on preparation for disaster. During the flood, we provided relief and picked up people to safer places from the remote area, provided medical support with medical team. We managed the last emergency flood operation in cooperation with other organizations or agencies like FNB, World Vision, Islamic Relief etc.
